Fire Extinguisher Service
[/vc_column_text][/pillar_hero][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”2/3″][vc_column_text]Fire extinguisher service is an important part of keeping fire extinguishers in operable condition. The state of Florida requires that all hand portable fire extinguishers are subjected to inspection and maintenance at certain service intervals. In this article, we are going to explain some of the more common services that fire extinguishers must have. This article is an opinion article, and should not be interpreted as advice.
- Fire Extinguisher Inspection – A fire extinguisher inspection is one of the required services that Florida fire code requires for all businesses. Although the term “inspection” is used somewhat interchangeably in NFPA10; the primary meaning is a monthly inspection. A monthly inspection is simply a quick check of the extinguisher to make sure it is still on a bracket, and charged properly. Every time an inspection is performed, a record should be kept. This quick check inspection does not need to be performed by a licensed and permitted technician and can be completed by a manager or owner of the business however, many businesses prefer to have a professional inspect them.
- Fire Extinguisher External Maintenance – In Florida, all hand portable fire extinguishers used in a business must be thoroughly examined by a licensed and permitted fire extinguisher technician once per year. This examination is called the external examination and offers the technician an opportunity to insure the fire extinguisher is operational and will continue to be within the test parameters for another year. It is during this external maintenance service that the fire extinguisher is given the Annual Inspection tag as required by Florida fire code.
- Fire Extinguisher Internal Maintenance – Most dry chemical hand portable fire extinguishers are subjected to internal service at the 6 year mark. This service is where the technician will completely disassemble the fire extinguisher and check the internal components as well as the chemical expellant.
- Hydrostatic Test – Most dry chemical fire extinguishers are subject to hydrostatic testing every twelve years. A hydrostatic test is essentially a pressure test to ensure the fire extinguisher is not damaged, and the shell can withstand many more years of use.
